God’s Way

Proverbs 20:24

24 A person’s steps are directed by the LORD.  How then can anyone understand their own way?

Proverbs 16:9

9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps.

It is interesting that we all seem to think that we are in charge of our lives when in actual fact we are not. Oh, I thought you knew that. Anyway, I discovered this truth in greater depth this week so I don’t blame you. I was reading the Proverbs this week and it is amazing how this fact is repeated periodically and in different ways all through the book. I learned from one of my teachers that repetition is for emphasis and emphasis alone; it is not a stammer.

So it got me thinking of Jonah. He was sent to warn a city of impending destruction and he opted to go his own way. He was in a boat going the opposite direction when a storm brewed and almost overcame the boat till they threw him overboard at his own request. He did not drown even in the deepest part of the sea rather he was swallowed by a big fish and spat out on the beach near his original destination. I must say it must have been icky to be in the belly of a large fish will all the bodily fluids and all. Anyway, he eventually arrived at the spot he was sent to and spoke the word of God. When the people came to repentance and he was stark raving mad. What he didn’t realise was that God is not bent on destruction rather he wants all men to come to him and love him and make his name known.

The thing I find most interesting is that even in his deliberate and great efforts to elude God he was brought back again and again to the place he had to be and the path that had been set up for him to walk and accomplish. I find this utterly remarkable. Even more awesome is the fact that God was so patient and gentle with him in an effort to bring him to the light. I realised that even today, He is as patient and gentle with me and will move to ensure that I accomplish the reason he has put me on this earth. I like Proverbs 19:21 which says, “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.”

I need to align with the PURPOSE that God intended me to achieve or else my life be of lesser value than He intended. The thing that remains with me daily is that the purpose of the Lord prevails. Regardless of how much I resist it and try to walk in my own ways His plan for me will not change to suit me and what I want to do. It is therefore in my best interests to be still before Him and listen and meditate on Him all the time then I can be all He wants me to be and more. When I am all He wants me to be I am effective and a blessing to all.

Are you like me? Does it overwhelm you sometimes to keep on the path He has selected for you? Do you wonder why things are not going the way you want them to? I urge you to find your peace and rest in Him and discover His purpose for you then you will thrive. When you are sure He is the one who has said you will stand regardless of the circumstances surrounding you. I know without a doubt that being comfortable and content in Him is worth every moment and I seek to be found there daily.

Connect to Jehovah and walk with Him no matter what and the rest of your life will make sense. I did not say be easy, I said, will make sense…sense because you will be assured of the hand of God in all you do and that will ensure success by His standards that is better than success by our standards. Walk in His purpose for you. You are blessed.

Peer pressure

I was online in one of the networking sites and looking at the profiles of people I know and I was stunned by the things I saw. People have done so well for themselves and for a moment there I wondered what I had achieved with my life. You see, it was so easy to read about the work others have done and wonder what impact I had made on this world. Here I am sitting in my office wondering about things that should really not be the issue but for that moment they were.

I will not trivialise what people have done and who they have met and worked with or how they have had economic impact. That is the not the purpose of my writing. I sat here and recognised that each one of us has a gifting and area of calling and different level of exposure and timing. Would you believe that some of us will not gain prominence till after we are dead and gone? That is what legacy is all about. Again…that is not the focus of my writing.

It took several days to get over the wonderful things I saw and allow the voice of God through. The one thing I found most astounding was the reality that God allows each of us to find and exploit our niches of influence at a different pace with different levels of success and prominence. The most important thing is what He desires for me to now and how well I am doing it. It means that I must first discover the riches of a love relationship with Him then seek to be the best I can be for Him.

In Jeremiah 29:10-14 it says, 10-11This is God’s Word on the subject: “As soon as Babylon’s seventy years are up and not a day before, I’ll show up and take care of you as I promised and bring you back home. I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. 12“When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. 13-14“When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. “Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree. “I’ll turn things around for you. I’ll bring you back from all the countries into which I drove you”—God’s Decree—”bring you home to the place from which I sent you off into exile. You can count on it. (The Message)

Several things struck me:

  • He comes at the appointed time – not a moment early or late; He will show up sort it out
  • He knows the plans – He laid them out Himself for me and they are for my good
  • He knows what He is doing – He is not goofing around
  • When I call He will listen, When I seek He will be found. Ties so well into Matt 6:33
  • I must be serious about finding Him – seeking with all my heart.
  • He will bring me into my destiny – there is no doubt about this one.

I am so encouraged that I don’t have to rely on me to make things happen but I can wait on Jehovah and He will see me though. Tap into His power and at the appointed time, in the appointed place with the appointed people, He will bring you to the fulfilment of His plan for you. Hold on to Jesus no matter who or what stand in the way.

This is my desire and I will stand regardless of the world around me.

Wisdom

2 Chronicles 1:7-12

7 That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

8 Solomon answered God, “You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, LORD God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

11 God said to Solomon, “Since this is your heart’s desire and you have not asked for wealth, possessions or honour, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, possessions and honour, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have.”

*********************

Imagine with me that God would visit you one night and say to you the very same thing he said to Solomon….what would your true answer be? For many of us we would think of all the things we have desired and that are important to making us feel good. However, look at Solomon, he asked for what would help him take care of the task set before him…to lead the children of God. He was less concerned about his personal matter because I guess he understood that when he stepped into his role and did what was expected of him the rest would come. I hear the words of Matt 6:33…seek first the kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.”

Did he know that? Owing to the fact that he was the son of david I believe he knew keenly the place of God and how he would take care of the other things. I know that from sitting with his father and hearing the things God had done in his father’s lifetime there was hope and certainty in walking with God. It was a daunting task to lead the children of Israel. So he acknowledged that he did not have what it took to run this nation right so he sought divine intervention. We are told that he established himself firmly over the kingdom for the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.

So here is Solomon, freshly anointed, installed and established as the king and he does several very profound things:

  1. He assessed his situation – he took careful stock of what he had to handle on a day to day basis: a people numerous as the sand on the sea and they were the great people of God close to his heart with a great many matters to be resolved.
  2. He accepted his reality – he could not do it on his own even if he tried or wanted to. There would be cases to judge and justice to dispense and in his own strength he would not be impartial. He needed someone bigger than him to provide balance
  3. He respected the people – called them a great people of God. He knew without a doubt that these people where different from the other nations around and had to be handled differently. This was higher than him and intervention was needed to be able to be the kind of leader they needed.
  4. He asked for wisdom and knowledge –he tapped into the one person who knew these people and could provide the perfect solution. He was unashamed to seek assistance and support from someone higher than himself

This is such a profound request… 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

Where are you? What have you been called to do? Have you counted the cost and found it higher than you could do on your own? Remember that God is the one who establishes us and provides what we need to be the kind of people we need to be. God has called us to be of service to him and to be change makers in the nations. He provides all we need in the right proportions. Remember Daniel? Daniel 1:17 As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” God provided all that they needed. He protected Daniel when he was thrown into the lion’s den and when others reported him and wanted him dead. He was his shield and protector.

Remember that in the walk we are set on there will be things that will appear too big to overcome and to challenge. These are the moments that God desires for us to look back into His eyes and understand that He will make a path for us achieve His purpose. We must be like Daniel and Solomon who regularly and diligently sought God and His will and obeyed Him no matter what. And even when they had instances of failure like Solomon when he married so many women, God remembered His covenant with David and spared Solomon loss.

His covenant to us and will come through for us when we keep close to him and follow in His ways. We must live in obedience and commitment to Him and His word. He will provide the wisdom on how to tackle the situation and make ways where there seem to be no way. However, for all this to happen we must have connected with His plan and purpose for our lives and be committed to it regardless of how it looks to those around us. We must know His will for us and ensure we are steadfast to it.

He will provide the strength, wisdom and ability to achieve so just connect with Him in obedience and be consistent and He will do the rest. Seek first the kingdom and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.

Realigning

THE TRUMPET by Bill Burns — 3/1/11:

I am coming to you today as the wind, the water, the fire and as the rain — a habitation of My glory, so that you will flourish in My kingdom and no longer be distraught, condemned or oppressed.  I come to you to set you free and to call you forth into glory.  I am calling you to lay aside all that hinders you and to come by faith to receive that which I am doing.  I am sending you a fresh spiritual atmosphere that brings forth the baptism of My Holy Spirit upon you.  Come with expectation, with joy, peace and faith.  Come and receive.  No longer hold yourself from the water; no longer hide from the wind; no longer disallow the fire.  Come rather and enjoy the fullness of My expression and the fullness of who I am in you.  For, it is written that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit; the Spirit of the living God; the God who transforms you, empowers you, helps you, keeps you in the Way and reveals His kingdom to you.  Come and learn.  Come and live.  Come and walk in My presence this day, says the Lord God.

***********************************
Now this is surreal…just when I was wondering about many things I open my mail and there is this message. It is so interesting how God knows what we need to hear and when we need to hear it. This came like a lightning bolt at noon that fries all the electronics. Boy oh boy what a mighty God we serve.

I was sitting here thinking of all the things I needed to get done and totally clueless how to achieve it all. I was beginning to think that there was no way out of it, then again, there was no way out of it on my own. So as I sat and thought and brooded I realised I was not making progress. I remembered a conversation I had yesterday that got me thinking. I was reminded that in the midst of all things the one constant is the reality that God is in control and He doesn’t change or move and it is up to me to keep close to him and follow in His footsteps every day.

So if He doesn’t move then why do I at times feel like he is far away and not able to help? Could it be that I am the one who has moved away and lost the connection? Is it like a power cable strung from a house to an outside venue to cater for sound? There are several joints and so the cable is run along the grass to the point of need. Then imagine that someone doesn’t see it and then trips on it doesn’t the sound go off? Yup, it does. That is sometimes what happens to us in our relationship with God. Thing is that is how we often live our lives…we talk to God at different paces and sometimes we do not realise that we have moved ever so slightly.

You have heard the analogy of two planes flying in the same general direction but begin with a divergence of one degree. In an hour they will be so far apart they will not be able to see each other at all. Sometimes that is how we are with God. We start off well and are in tune and walk with God minute by minute so that it becomes usual. His voice is part of our lives and we are in tune. Then one day it just seems lonely and empty. Oh He is still at work and all but are you as close to His work as you were before? I find that sometimes things change and I need to realign to new directions and I didn’t quite get them clearly. I am aligning and realigning and it is interesting how good the peace that comes with that is.

It makes me ask you my dear reader, what does the above message mean to you? Where are you? What is God saying from these few lines? It could simply be a reminder that He loves you. A light tap on the shoulder to remind you how beautiful you are. What has He kept speaking into your heart about and you have had a hard time grasping it? I think it is a clarion call from the top of the mountain that He is interested in you.

Well, be like Mary in Luke 1:38 when she said, “I am the Lord’s servant…May it be to me as you have said…”
